FAQ RECAP!

I wanted to put some basic info in an easy to find spot, a little FAQ section, if you will.

What do you do as a food and beverage stylist?

I prepare and arrange food and drinks so they look their best on camera or film. This can be a print ad, a video for social media, a fast food TV commercial, or for a scripted TV show or movie. Most of my jobs start of with a quick “getting to know you” call with the production company and/or client. Once the job is booked, there is typically a kick off call with the main crew, production and client, and right before the shoot we meet again for a pre-pro call. In the meantime, I am also going through the creative and the shotlist, making shopping and prep lists, booking my team, and working through the logistics with my point person from the production team. I make sure my team and I have the equipment we need to be set up for success either on location or in a studio. In short, do I have refrigeration/ freezer space, work tables, a water source and a heat source? Sometimes I attend the location scout with the director, AD, and set stylist to help determine where my team should set up. I also need to review any brand standards and best practices - like does the client use real ice or fake? Do I have enough of the right fake ice, or know where to source premium cocktail ice? Are they sending their product only or can I supplement with fresh items? Am I staying true to the recommended serving size, or is there flexibility to do what looks right on the plate? I also need to do a lot of “food math”, i.e. try to estimate what quantity of food I need to make sure I have enough for multiple takes. Within budget, of course. And once we’re through the shoot it’s time to wrap out of our location, meaning it’s time to wash dishes, break down tables, repack my kit, donate as much leftover food as possible, and hit the road. Last thing to do - put on my accountant’s hat and create my invoice and record all my expenses. Phew!

Where are you based?

The short answer - I work as a local in Los Angeles and New York City. The real answer is that I can work anywhere, and have been lucky enough to work in places like San Diego, Austin, Miami, Toronto, and Buenos Aires.
